Chicago is a study in diverse lived realities. There is much pride in its professional sports teams, theatre, and other cultural events. It is also a city that grapples with a dichotomy of extreme wealth and opulence vs. extreme poverty and homelessness. The high cost of living within city limits often serves to push people with lower socioeconomic backgrounds further to the margins. JVs have the opportunity and challenge to encounter both sides of this experience.
Many free events and activities, particularly at the various parks, are available within the city. Chicago also has an excellent public transportation system – perhaps one of the best in the Midwest. JVs have appreciated connecting with volunteers from other faith-based organizations (such as Amate House) in the city. In addition, the JVs have found close connections with the Jesuits at Loyola Chicago!
